Club members John Sires, John Hawley, Geoff Gauger, Bert Whitaker along with Jesse Porter, who is also the Executive Director of the Austin San Antonio affiliate of Rebuilding Together, performed charity work for a disabled Air Force veteran in partnership with the Rebuilding Together affiliate. The crew constructed a fence gate for the single, female homeowner who needed a fenced yard to keep dogs contained while being trained to search for turtles, such as endangered ornate box turtles.
Under Jesse’s guidance, three members undertook the task of removing the old gate, breaking up concrete to erect a fence post, constructing and hanging a gate frame, and nailing pickets to the finished frame. Meanwhile, Bert was busy nailing pickets to a newly installed portion of fence and weed whacking overgrown brush from the back and side yards.
The group worked as a team to complete the charitable project in just under 3 hours. Except for Jesse, no one had skills with constructing a fence gate, so this was a great learning experience for everyone else. In the end, everyone walked away with a satisfying feeling knowing their effort helped someone in need.
The Club will be working with Jesse to identify potential future projects for the Club to participate in.
